Warren MacKenzie was an icon for pottery lovers around the world. He died a very short time ago, on 31 December 2018, at the age of 94. As the father of the Mingei movement in America, he was hugely influential in fostering the value of simple, honest pottery to be used and enjoyed by everyone, every day. He taught generations of prominent potters at the University of Minnesota.
This exhibit is a celebration of Warren’s life and work and influence, and is a wonderful chance for West Coast pottery lovers to see Warren’s work in person and to join us in appreciation of his contributions. It features over 45 master works by Warren, plus 6 pieces by some his amazing students:
Robert Briscoe, Randy Johnston, Sandy Simon, Guillermo Cuellar, and Jeff Oestreich.
All of the pieces are generously on loan from the collection of Michael Perea, collector of Warren for over 20 years. This exhibit is a milestone for FCAM in many ways. It is the first dedicated to single artist; the first to be organized by a guest curator with works not part of the Underwood collection; and (as far as we know) the first museum retrospective since Warren’s passing. Michael and I have been planning this exhibit for several months and it is our honor to share it with you now.
The Foothills Ceramic Art Museum (FCAM) features selections from Kenneth Underwood's over 800 piece collection of internationally acclaimed ceramic artworks. New and rotating FCAM exhibits will open approximately every three months, featuring new selections from the Underwood Permanent Collection, with a focus on a particular style, region, genre or technique.
